Like it or loath it, Christmas is fast approaching, and a spot of shopping is the perfect excuse to get away on a short city break. Check out 5 of our favourite European Christmas Shopping Breaks here...
The City that never sleeps really does come to life at Christmas time, and with so many travel options to get there, there's really no need to go elsewhere this Christmas. Great for families, London boasts the amazing ice rink at Somerset House and Santa's Secret Village where kids can decorate gingerbread! It's also the perfect chance to visit the West End for a show and this year there will be a German Christmas market along the South Bank. Why go anywhere else?
Brussels and Bruges, Belguim
You cant visit one without the other, and there is no need to either! Just a short journey across the channel allows you to see the traditional Belgium crafts in Brussels and the pretty markets of Medieval Bruges - which also features an open air ice rink and giant Christmas Tree. Bruges has a wonderful fairy tale feel will whisk you away from the real world. Equally as dreamy, Brussels has been voted as one of the best for Christmas markets and has an abundance of Christmas stalls where you can buy everything from chocolate to charming decorations.
Germany is of course, a firm favourite when it comes to Christmas shopping and are renowned for their festive markets. However, one of our personal favourites is Leipzig, which dates back to 1458! However, not only one of the oldest, its also one of the largest markets in the country. Traditionally very festive, the city is sure to be done up, well, like a Christmas tree and guarantees a delightful treat for all the senses!
We know it's already famous for being beautiful, but at Christmas time, it's simply stunning. Another destination that is perfect for kids, the City Hall Square is transformed into a magical fairy tale experience, fondly known as the Vienna Magic of Advent! Parents however wont be left out and there are plenty of opportunities to try local baking and traditional warming drinks. If you visit Vienna during the festive period, the Christmas illuminations in the Rathauspark are not to be missed!
Prague, Czech Republic
The Christmas markets in Prague are the most impressive and popular in the Czech Republic. When it comes to traditional and crafty gifts, as well as festive decorations, there's nowhere better. You can also sample all all of Prague's traditional favourite culinary delights - just forget about the diet for a while, it is Christmas after all! For the family, there's an animal stable where children can pet such animals as sheep, goats, and of course, Mary's faithful donkey. With it's wonderful atmosphere and brightly lit stalls, Prague really is your winter wonderland.
